{"id":117,"date":"2020-11-15T20:12:27","date_gmt":"2020-11-15T20:12:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oedipa.org\/?page_id=117"},"modified":"2020-11-15T20:13:50","modified_gmt":"2020-11-15T20:13:50","slug":"the-high-seas-of-dysphoria","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oedipa.org\/?page_id=117","title":{"rendered":"The High Seas of Dysphoria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Drawing on her vast experience singing classical repertoire, associate artist Lucia Lucas developed a staging concept for \u2018Die Frist ist um\u2019 from Wagner\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Der Fliegende H\u00f6llander<\/em>, in collaboration with Oedipa, who produced three performances in London in summer 2016. Likening the Dutchman\u2019s exhaustion and endless battle with the sea to lived experience of gender dysphoria, Lucia\u2019s performance of the aria set the formidable force of Wagner\u2019s music in a new context \u2014 the immense, self-derived power to transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supported by the Artists\u2019 International Development Fund, and with performances accompanied by pianist Katherine Tinker, the project was an experiment in queering operatic repertoire, and bringing the repertoire into\u00a0queer spaces using conventions from drag performance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Highs Seas of Dysphoria&nbsp;<\/em>was presented in association with and at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180129060247\/http:\/\/woteverworld.com\/\">Bar Wotever<\/a>,&nbsp;and at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180129060247\/http:\/\/www.milkpresents.com\/\">Milk Presents<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180129060247\/http:\/\/www.theglory.co\/\">The Glory<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped\"><ul
